Every Muslim
who has vowed that Allah's Lord Rabb, his religious Islam and his apostle
Muhammad, must always understand the meaning of this pledge and be able to
realize its values in the reality of life. Every
dimension of his life must be colored by those values in
both safe and threatened conditions.
But in the
reality of life and the phenomenon of the people, we realize that not everyone
who has a good understanding of Islam is able to implement in all sides of his
life. And people who are able to implement it may not be able to survive as
expected of Islam, namely commitment and Istiqamah in holding his
teachings throughout the course of his life.
So Istiqamah
in holding the rope of Islam is a fundamental obligation and a necessity for
the servants of God who want husnul khatimah and the hopes of his Paradise. The
Messenger of Allah said: Narrated from Abu Hurairah r.a. That Allah's Messenger
(may peace be upon him) said: "Be moderate and pray, know that none of you
survived by their deeds, they asked," And you also ... The Messenger of
Allah said, "And I (not saved) Swt has covered me with His grace and
grace. " (H.R. Muslim of Abu Hurairah).
Istiqamah is not only
commanded by ordinary people, but this Istiqamah is also commanded
to the great men throughout the history of world civilization, ie the Prophets
and the Apostles. Notice the following verse;
"So
keep your (Istiqamahlah) in the right way, as commanded to you and
(as) the one who has repented with you and do not exceed the limit: for He is
Seer of what ye do." (Q.S.Hud: 112)
Definition
Istiqamah is
anonymous from thughyan (deviation or exceeding limits). It can mean standing
tall in a place without ever shifting, because the root Istiqamah word of
the word "qaama" which means standing. So etymologically, Istiqamah
means perpendicular. In a large Indonesian dictionary, Istiqamah is
defined as a steadfast attitude and always consistent.
In
terminology, Istiqamah can be interpreted with some of the following
sense;
·
Abu Bakr
As-Siddiq ra when asked about the Istiqamah he replied
that Istiqamah
is purity of unity (can not associate Allah with anything and anyone).
·
Umar bin Khattab
ra said, "Istiqamah is a commitment to command and prohibition and should not be
deceptive as a weasel trick".
·
'Uthman ibn Affan
(may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Istiqamah is sanctifying charity to Allah Taala"
·
Ali ibn Abu Talib
ra said, "Istiqamah is carrying out obligations"
·
Al-Hasan said,
"Istiqamah is obedience and away from
disobedience".
·
Mujahid said, "Istiqamah
is a commitment to the creed of tawhid to meet with Allah Taala".
·
Ibn Taimiah said,
"They are in love and worship to Him without turning left and right".
So Muslims
who berIstiqamah is a Muslim who always maintain faith and
faith in any situation and condition.
He was like
a rock solid against the onslaught of waves that come and go. He does not
easily sluggish or experience futur and degradation in the journey of da'wah.
He is always
patient in facing all the temptations in the field of da'wah diembannya.
Although the stage of propagation and central character changes. That is the
true Muslim man, always Istiqamah in all the way and
throughout the stages of da'wah.
The Trials And The Basic Istiqamah
In the
Qur'an and Sunnah of the Holy Prophet many verses and hadiths relating to the
issue of Istiqamah among others are;
"So
keep your (Istiqamahlah) in the right way, as commanded to you and
(also) those who have repented with you and do not transgress the limits: for
He is All-Seer of what ye do." (Surah 11: 112).
This verse
implies to us that the Messenger and those who repent with him should give the
obligation as instructed. Istiqamah in mabda (base or
beginning of departure), minhaj and hadaf (goals) are outlined and should not
deviate from divine commands.
"Verily
those who say," Our Lord is God "then they confirm their stance, then
the angels will come down to them by saying," Do not be afraid and do not
be sad; And delight them with the jannah that God has promised you ".
"We are
your protectors in the life of the world and the Hereafter, in which ye obtain
what ye desire and obtain (also) what ye ask".
"As a
meal (to you) from the Forgiving, the Most Merciful." (41: 30-32).
"Those
who say," Our Lord is Allah ", then they remain Istiqamah then
there is no fear of them and they will not (also) mourn.
They are the
inhabitants of heaven, they will abide therein; In return for what they have
done. (Surah 46: 13-14) "
The above
four verses describe the urgency of Istiqamah after faith and the
great reward promised by Allah SWT such as loss of fear, sadness and heaven Servants
of God who constantly strive for the values of faith in any
condition or situation. This is also confirmed by some of the prophetic
traditions below;
"I
said," O Messenger of Allah tell me a word in Islam that I will not ask
anyone but you. He said, "Say," I believe in Allah, then berIstiqamahlah
(do not deviate). "(Muslim HR from Sufyan bin Abdullah)
"The
Messenger of Allah (saws) said:" Be moderate and be intentional, know that
no one of you survived by his deeds. They asked, "And also you Yes ... The
Messenger of Allah, he said," And also I (not saved) only Allah Almighty
has covered me with His grace and grace. "(Muslim from Abu Hurairah)
In addition
to the above verses and hadiths, there are some clerical statements about the
urgency of the Istiqamah as follows;
Some wise
men say, "Be you a man who has Istiqamah, not a man who
seeks karomah, because in fact you are moving to look for karomah while your
Robb demands you to bersstiqomah."
Shaykh
al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah said, "The greatest karomah is holding the Istiqamah."
Factors That Give Birth Istiqamah
Ibn Qayyim
in "Madaarijus Salikiin" explains that there are six factors capable
of giving birth to Istiqamah in one's soul as follows;
1. Charity
and perform optimization
"And
strive in the way of Allah with the true jihad, He has chosen you and He has
not made for you in the religion of a narrow. (Follow) the religion of your
parents Abraham, He has named you all men, (So) in this (Qur'an), that the
Apostle be a witness against you and that all of you may be witnesses of all
human beings, then establish prayer, fulfill zakat and hold on to the ropes of
God. Your guardian, then He is the best Protector and Best Helper. " (Surah
22:78)
2. Moderate
between transgressing and wasting action.
"And
those who, when they spend, are neither excessive, nor stingy, nor are (the
purchases) in the midst of such." (Surah 25:67)
From
Abdullah bin Amru he said that Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said:
"Every charity has its peak and every peak must have kefuturan (keloyoan)
.Who anyone who in futurnya (return) to my sunnah, then he was lucky and who in
the futurnya (Back) to other than that, it means that he has been wretched
"(HR Imam Ahmad from Anshar's best friend)
3. Not
beyond the limit that has been outlined science
"And
follow not that which ye have no knowledge of it: verily the hearing, the sight
and the heart, all will be held accountable." (Surah 17:36)
4. Not
leaning on contemporal factors, but rather leaning on something obvious
5. Sincerity
"Yet
they are not commanded but to worship Allah by purifying obedience to Him in
the righteous religion, and that they establish prayer and perform Zakat, and
that is the righteous religion." (Surah 98: 5)
6. Following
the Sunnah
Allah's
Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: "Who among you is still alive
after me will surely see the hard distinction, then you follow my Sunna and
sunnah of the Rashidin Caliph (straight), bite him with your fangs" (Abu
Daud of Al-Irbadl Bin Sariah)
Imam Sufyan
said, "It is not accepted a word except if it is accompanied by charity,
and it is not straightforward words and deeds except by intention, and it is
not straightforward words, charity and intentions unless it is in accordance
with the sunnah."
Positive
Impact And Istiqamah Fruit
Muslim man
who has an intentions and who is always committed to the values of the truth of Islam in all aspects of his life will feel its
positive impact and the delicious fruit of his life. The impact and fruit of Istiqamah
as follows;
Courage (Syaja'ah)
Muslims who
are always Istiqamah in his life he will have extraordinary
courage. He will not be afraid to face all obstacles of da'wah. He will never
be a coward and a traitor in the wilderness of struggle. In addition, it is
also different with the person in whose heart there is a nifaq disease that
always creates the giddiness in stepping and the fear and fear in the face of
obstacles of da'wah.
Notice the
word of Allah Taal in the verse 52 of al-Maidah below;
"Then
you will see those who have diseases in their hearts (hypocrites) as soon as
they approach them (Jews and Christians), saying," We are afraid of
disaster. "Hopefully God will bring victory (to the Messenger of Allah) Or
a judgment from His side, and therefore they become sorry for what they keep in
their hearts. "
And we can
look back on the courage of friends and cadres of da'wah in this matter;
When the
Messenger of Allah (saws) offered the sword to the Companions in the Uhud war,
Abu Dujanah immediately said, "I will fulfill his right, then bring the
sword and slash into the heads of the polytheists." (Muslim)
When a
friend got a reply from the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) that he
entered heaven if he was killed in a battle field, he never wasted his time
again while throwing dates in his hand then he slid into the battlefield and
finally got what he wanted, Syahadah (martyrs). (Muttafaqun Alaih)
Allah's
Messenger (may peace be upon him) said to Ali ibn Abu Talib after he received
the banner of Islam in the battle of Khaibar as follows: "Walk, do not
turn so Allah Almighty gives you victory." Then Ali walked, then paused
and did not look around as he asked in a loud voice; "O Messenger of Allah
on what basis am I fighting man?" He said, "Fight them to testify
that there is no god but Allah ..." (Muslim)
This is the
image of courage of friends who are born from keIstiqamahannya
which must be followed by successor generations in upholding the values of truth, goodness and beauty of Islam.
Ithmi'nan (tranquility)
The faith of
a Muslim who has reached the steps of perfection will give birth to tsabat and Istiqamah
in the field of struggle. Tsabat and Istiqamah themselves will
give birth to tranquility, peace and happiness. Though he through the long
da'wah obstacles, through the steep road of struggle and tread the twists of
the jungle of the jungle of struggle. Because he was convinced that this was
the way that the great servants of God had ever made, the Prophets, the
Apostles, the next best generation and the generation determined to carry the
torch relay of his da'wah. Consider the words of God below;
"And
how many of the prophets are at war with them a great number of the cautious
(pious) followers, they are not weakened by the calamity that strikes them in
the way of Allah, and are not lethargic nor surrendered (to Allah) -patient
man." (Surah 3: 146)
"Those
who believe and do not confuse their faith with tyranny (shirk), they are the
ones who are secure and they are the ones who are guided." (Surah 6:82)
"Those
who believe and their hearts are rested in the remembrance of Allah: Remember,
it is with the remembrance of Allah that the heart is rested." (Surah
13:28)
Tafa'ul
(optimist)
KeIstiqamahan
owned by a Muslim also gave birth to an optimistic attitude. He is far from
being pessimistic in living and navigating the ocean of life. He always never
feel tired and restless that eventually gave birth to frustration in living his
life. Kefuturan that tries to disturb the soul, the turmoil that wants to tear
out the mutual soul and the anxiety that haunts his mind will be healed by his
belief in the will and the divine decisions. This is as indicated by some of
the verses below;
"There
is no disaster on the earth and (not) to yourself but it is written in the book
(Lauhul Mahfuzh) before We created it, in fact it is easy for Allah.
(We explain
so) so that you do not mourn for what you missed, and that you may not be
overjoyed by what He has given you. And Allah does not love any prideful person
who prides himself. "(Surah 57: 22-23)
"O ye
sons, go ye, then seek the news of Joseph and his brother, and do not despair
of the grace of God, not in despair of the mercy of God, but the heathen."
(Surah 12: 87)
Ibrahim
said, "No one despair of the mercy of his Lord, save those who go
astray." (Surah 15:56)
So with
these three Istiqamahs, a Muslim will always get the victory and
feel the happiness, both in the world and promised later in the future. Notice
the verse below;
30. Those
who say "Our Lord is God" and then confirm their stance, the angels
will come down to them by saying: "Do not be afraid and do not be sad, and
delight them with the jannah that God has promised you" .
31. we are
your protectors in the life of the world and the Hereafter; In whom ye obtain
what ye desire and obtain in it what ye ask.
32. as a
dish (to you) from the Forgiving, the Most Merciful.
"Verily
those who say," Our Lord is God "then they confirm their stance, then
the angels will come down to them by saying," Do not be afraid and do not
be sad; And delight them with the jannah that God has promised you.
We are
your protectors in the life of the world and the hereafter; In which ye obtain
what ye desire and obtain (also) what ye ask.
As a meal
(to you) from the Forgiving, the Most Merciful. "(41: 30-32)
